L&T Wins Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train T1 Track Contract

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the lowest bidder for the T-1 track work package of the Mumbai – Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Bullet Train) project.

The contract covers track installation for:

  • 1.028 km C-1 Package – BKC underground station (being built by MEIL – HCC JV)
  • 20.377 km C-2 Package – Underground tunnel by Afcons Infrastructure
  • 135.45 km C-3 Package – Elevated viaduct and 3 stations by L&T

Key Highlights:

  • Project: Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train (MAHSR) Track Package T-1
  • Client: National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL)
  • Value: Approx. ₹4571.37 Crore (₹1685.37 Crore + JPY 44.75 Billion + USD 28.34 Million)
  • Scope: Track work for BKC to Zaroli Village stretch (156.855 km)
  • Contract Type: Design, Supply, Construction, Testing & Commissioning

Bids for this package were invited in October 2024, with a 2157-day (5.9 years) deadline. After technical evaluation, only L&T and DRA Infracon – DMRC JV qualified, with L&T submitting the lowest bid of approx. ₹4571.37 crore.

Once awarded, this will be L&T’s 9th major package win for India’s first Bullet Train project, adding to its portfolio of civil and system packages including C3, C4, C5, C6, D2, EW-1, P4, and T3.

J-slab Track System Japan

The special slab track system (J-Slab) is being used for this project instead of the traditional ballasted system, ensuring higher speed capability and safety. L&T has already set up a High-Speed Rail Track Slab Manufacturing Facility in Anand, Gujarat, to support track works.

Current Status of Bullet Train Track Packages:

  • T-1 (Maharashtra) – L&T declared lowest bidder (156.855 km)
  • T-2 (Gujarat) – Installation underway by IRCON International (237.10 km)
  • T-3 (Gujarat) – Installation underway by L&T (114.60 km)

This contract is part of the ₹1.1 lakh crore Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train project, connecting both cities with 12 stations and boosting India’s high-speed rail infrastructure.
