L&T Bags EPC Contract for 116 MWac Solar PV + 241 MWh BESS Project in Bihar

The Renewables business vertical of L&T has secured a significant Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) order to develop a 116 MWac solar photovoltaic (PV) project integrated with a 241 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kajra, Lakhisarai district of Bihar.

Key Highlights of L&T BESS Project of Bihar:

  • Project Location: Kajra, Lakhisarai district, Bihar
  • Client: State Utility (Name Not Disclosed)
  • Contractor: L&T Renewables
  • Solar Capacity: 116 MWac Grid-Connected Solar PV
  • Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): 241 MWh, 4-Hour Duration
  • Total Storage at Site (Lakhisarai): 495 MWh – India’s Largest State Utility Awarded Co-Located BESS Project
  • Technology: Liquid-Cooled BESS for Enhanced Power Density, Safety, and Lifecycle
  • Key Benefit: Energy Time-Shifting for Peak Demand Support
  • Policy Alignment: Supports GoI’s Push for Co-Located RE + Storage & Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan
  • Previous Order: 275 MW Solar PV EPC Project in Gujarat

This project is an extension of the earlier phase at the same site, bringing the total co-located battery storage capacity to 495 MWh—making it the largest co-located solar + storage project awarded by any state utility in India.

The 4-hour duration BESS will allow surplus solar energy to be stored and dispatched during peak demand periods, enabling energy time-shifting and enhancing grid reliability.

The storage system will be equipped with liquid cooling technology, offering higher power density, improved safety, and a longer operational life compared to conventional air-cooled systems.

This development is in line with the Government of India’s vision to scale up co-located renewable energy and storage infrastructure, and also supports Bihar’s Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Abhiyan—a flagship initiative aimed at promoting sustainable water use, afforestation, and climate resilience.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities in the region and contribute to the state’s long-term energy security and decarbonization goals.

Prior to this, the L&T Renewables team had also secured a major 275 MW Solar PV EPC contract in Gujarat, further strengthening its portfolio of flexible and efficient clean energy systems across India.
