Bhadla-Fatehpur HVDC Project : Setting Benchmark for India’s Renewable Future

The Bhadla-Fatehpur HVDC link is a new ultra-high-voltage direct-current transmission line under development in India. In early 2025 Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), in consortium with Hitachi Energy India, won a contract to design and build this ±800 kV HVDC bipole capable of transferring 6,000 MW between Bhadla in Rajasthan and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh​.

It works at a voltage level of ±800 kV, making it an Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission system.

The approximately 950 km overhead HVDC line will form a dedicated renewable-energy corridor, evacuating up to 6 GW of solar/wind power from Rajasthan’s RE zones to northern demand centers.

This project connects Rajasthan in the west to Uttar Pradesh in the north, showing how it links two regions with different energy needs.

Rajasthan has the Bhadla Solar Park, one of the biggest solar power plants in the world. It is located in the dry Thar Desert and covers a huge area, with a total power capacity of about 2245 MW.

Rajasthan has a lot of solar energy and acts as a major producer, while Uttar Pradesh, with its many industries and transport systems, needs a lot of power.

The HVDC terminals in this project are built with a special bi-pole and bi-directional design. This means electricity can flow both ways, making the power grid more flexible, stable, and quicker to respond to changes.

The project is scheduled for completion by in 2029, the project carries an estimated cost of ₹25,000 crore and is a key part of India’s “500 GW by 2030” clean-energy ambition​.

    • The link is rated for 6,000 MW transfer at ±800 kV, making it one of India’s largest HVDC schemes. This ±800 kV bipolar configuration can deliver a total voltage difference of 1,600 kV between poles.

    • The HVDC overhead transmission line spans roughly 950 km between the Bhadla converter station and the Fatehpur converter station.
  • 🚉 Converter Stations:
    • Two converter terminals will be built – one at Bhadla (Rajasthan) and one at Fatehpur (Uttar Pradesh).
