The project is part of Germany’s 700-kilometer-long SuedLink direct current line, a crucial infrastructure designed to transport renewable electricity from northern to southern Germany. Once completed, it will strengthen the national grid and support the country’s energy transition.

Construction activities are set to begin in September, with STRABAG starting early works that include a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operation near Walsrode to safely cross under the Aller river. The main construction work is expected to begin by the end of 2025, pending the final planning approval.

While most of the SuedLink cable will be installed using the open trench method, HDD technology will be applied where the route encounters natural or built obstacles, such as rivers and roads.

This new contract follows several previous SuedLink and SuedOstLink awards to STRABAG, underlining the company’s strong role in the development of Germany’s modern energy infrastructure. With this award, all 15 SuedLink section contracts have now been allocated, marking a major step forward in delivering one of Europe’s most significant grid expansion projects.
