Saipem, Worley and other majors win FEED roles in INPEX’s Indonesian LNG project

INPEX Masela, a subsidiary of Japan’s energy major INPEX, has initiated Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) activities for the Abadi LNG Project in Indonesia’s Masela Block, aiming to unlock one of Asia’s largest gas resources for liquefied natural gas production.

Key Highlights:

  • Project Location: Masela Block, Indonesia
  • Operator: INPEX Masela (Subsidiary of INPEX Corporation, Japan)
  • Project Name: Abadi LNG Project
  • FEED Segments: FPSO, SURF, GEP, OLNG
  • Carbon Capture Integration: Included in all segments
  • Consortiums Involved: Technip, JGC, Saipem, McDermott, Tripatra
  • Additional Contractor: Worley SEA Indonesia (GEP and SURF packages)
  • Project Partners: Pertamina (20%), Petronas (15%)
  • LNG Production Capacity: ~9.5 MTPA
  • Condensate Output: 35,000 barrels/day
  • Natural Gas Output: 150 million cubic feet/day
  • CCS Component: Incorporated in Revised Development Plan (Approved December 2023)

The FEED phase will focus on four key segments:

  • Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO)
  • Subsea Umbilicals, Risers, and Flowlines (SURF)
  • Gas Export Pipeline (GEP)
  • Onshore LNG (OLNG) Facility

Except for OLNG, all segments have been awarded, each incorporating carbon capture and storage (CCS) to support the project’s decarbonization objectives.

Two consortiums have been selected for the dual FEED method to design the OLNG facility competitively.

  • Consortium 1: Led by Technip Engineering Indonesia, includes Technip Indonesia and JGC Indonesia
  • Consortium 2: Led by Saipem Indonesia, includes Tripatra Engineers & Constructors, Tripatra Engineering, and McDermott Indonesia

Worley SEA Indonesia will lead the FEED for GEP and SURF, tasked with defining the specifications from FPSO to OLNG facilities.

Upon completion, the Abadi LNG Project is expected to deliver:

  • ~9.5 MTPA of LNG, equaling over 10% of Japan’s annual LNG imports
  • 35,000 barrels/day of condensate
  • 150 million cubic feet/day of natural gas

The EPC contract will be awarded to the consortium offering the most technically and commercially viable FEED, aligning with INPEX’s strategy to enhance energy security across Indonesia, Japan, and Asia, while ensuring lower-carbon energy production.

This major project saw a key transition in 2023 when Pertamina (20%) and Petronas (15%) joined INPEX (65%) after Shell divested its stake. With the CCS-integrated revised development plan approved in December 2023, the Abadi LNG Project is now a key pillar of INPEX’s sustainable energy ambitions.
